Eight and Forty $3000 National Lung & Respiratory Scholarship

The 8 & 40 organization has been a long supporter of Hacienda HealthCare due to its mission which “is to offer aid and support with the prevention and control of lung disease(s) in children.” For 50 years Hacienda HealthCare has been providing specialized care to medically fragile children with respiratory illnesses. Hacienda also provides Synagis® clinics throughout Arizona and one in Denver to help protect premature babies and high risk children from RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) disease.

The 8 & 40 is rooted in supporting the medical community specifically those professionals directly involved in respiratory illnesses in children.

The original scholarships were for Registered Nurses to advance their training in caring for ‘our Special Children.’ In 2014 respiratory therapists were added as eligible to apply. The  purpose is to help students with the hope that they will seek and find the means to help our special children, be it through practicing their career or in a research field related to lung and respiratory diseases. The scholarship amount is $3,000 annually which shall be administered by the college/university or therapist program financial office.

Since the scholarship program was added in 1957, more than $1.4 million have been awarded.
